Corporate Responsibility - Aviva Junk

Aviva Junk is Hong Kong's first "green" junk with numerous cutting-edge, renewable energy and energy efficiency devices.

The launch of the Aviva Junk marks another milestone of Aviva's commitment in environmental protection. Aviva has invited The University of Hong Kong (HKU) to develop "green" elements for the Aviva Junk as part of our efforts in caring for the environment. With the support from the HKU, environmentally friendly devices including solar panels and micro wind turbines to harness renewable energy have been installed on board in early 2009.

These devices can help reduce greenhouse gas emission from the junk and mitigate the environmental impact. We also sponsor research projects conducted by HKU where the Aviva Junk will be a test site for the projects. The objectives of the research projects are to enhance the use of bio-diesel in marine engines, to reduce dark smoke emission from the junk by smoke scrubbing system and to increase wind power conversion efficiency by micro wind turbines with airfoil design. The Aviva Junk is served as an educational tool to demonstrate the application of sustainable designs and technologies.
