Corporate Responsibility - Power Smart Contest
In 2007, Aviva Hong Kong sponsored the "Power Smart Contest" organised by Friends of the Earth (HK). The contest asks the public for help in reducing air pollution in Hong Kong by reducing the amount of electricity consumed. Aviva is the first commercial company to sponsor the campaign, which required each participating household to reduce energy consumption by at least 3% for the months of June through August 2007 (based on the previous year's consumption for the same period).
As a result, Aviva and its team members collectively saved 5,059 kWh of electricity – enough to power 50,000 light bulbs (100w) for one hour. As an added gesture, Aviva donated HK$50,590 to help support Friends of the Earth's (HK) long term mission and goals. Among Aviva participants, one team successfully cut 39.1% (820 units) of their consumption, winning second runner-up prize in the "Big Cut Family Group" competition.
The results of the Power Smart Contest were very encouraging. Over 400 housing estates, 500 families and 80 schools took part in the contest. A total of 4,023,525kWh electricity was saved, equivalent to saving 4 million dollars in electricity costs, as well as a reduction of 3,018 tonnes of carbon dioxide emission normally required to produce that amount of power.
