The subsidiary of the UK’s largest1 insurance companies Aviva plc., Aviva Hong Kong collaborated with The Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong (“BGCA”) again for another corporate social responsibility activity on 6 July 2013, a group of children from the low-income families of the BGCA were arranged to visit a leading bookstore and make purchase of their beloved books under the sponsorship of Aviva Hong Kong.

Aviva plc. has long been championing to recognize the rights of the street-connected children through the “Street to School” programmes. In echo to the Group’s commitment in offering development opportunities for each and every child, Aviva Hong Kong has organized this April a special community-enriching charity event for the children to be on board of a cruise ship. Shortly after, the company sponsored last weekend another 40 underprivileged children studying primary three to junior forms of secondary school to visit the flagship store of Commercial Press in Tsimshatshui and pick freely their favorite books at no cost. Aviva Hong Kong hopes this activity will allow the participating children to experience the fun of reading and uncover the wealth of knowledge.

Each of the children felt exhilarated when they came in. Following the talk by Commercial Press on the joy of reading, they were then divided into groups for a guided tour of the bookstore. Commercial Press’ representative explained to them how the bookstore operates and how the books are classified and displayed. The highlight of the visit then came when the children were given the chance to select their beloved books at their own choice and at their own pace but free-of-charge.

In face of the numerous choices, some of the children looked puzzled in their book selection.. Aviva Hong Kong’s volunteers, who also joined the bookstore visit, immediately gave their guidance and book selection tips. At the end of the session, all the children were thrilled to take home with their favorite books.

Before the event ended, the organizer has arranged a special session to make “Green Bookmarks” with use of recycled materials. Under the guidance of the instructor, all the children exhibited their creativity and made a unique bookmark as a souvenir for themselves. It is hoped that they can bring home with “love the planet” message making the bookstore visit more rewarding.
